Burnout

Burnout: It's More Than Being Tired

July 15, 20262 min read

By mid-July, many of us are feeling the weight of the year.

Deadlines. Family responsibilities. Caregiving. Running a business. Grieving a loss. Showing up for everyone else while quietly running on empty.

We often think burnout only happens at work, but burnout can show up anywhere chronic stress goes unaddressed.

The World Health Organization defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by emotional exhaustion, increased mental distance or cynicism, and reduced effectiveness.

Yet many mental health professionals recognize that the experience of burnout extends beyond the workplace. Parents, caregivers, entrepreneurs, ministry leaders, students, and those navigating grief or major life transitions can experience the same emotional exhaustion, overwhelm, and depletion that often accompany prolonged stress. Emerging research also suggests many people identify life stressors outside of work as significant contributors to burnout-like symptoms.

Burnout doesn't always announce itself.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • Constant fatigue, even after sleeping.

  • Feeling emotionally numb or detached.

  • Irritability over small things.

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.

  • Losing joy in things you once loved.

  • Feeling like you're surviving instead of living.

Burnout isn't a sign of weakness.

It's often a sign you've been strong for too long without enough restoration.

Three Wellness Tips

1. Pause before you push.
Take five intentional minutes each day to breathe, check in with yourself, and notice what your mind and body need.

2. Protect your boundaries.
Not every request deserves a "yes." Rest is productive, and boundaries are part of healthy living.

3. Refill before you're empty.
Don't wait until you're exhausted to care for yourself. Schedule recovery just as intentionally as you schedule work.

Healing begins with awareness.

And awareness creates change.
